"Aladdin" on Broadway celebrates 4,000 performances, and honors the late Howard Ashman

Since opening March 20, 2014, at the New Amsterdam Theatre, the Broadway production is currently the 15th longest-running show in Broadway history. The milestone also fell on what would have been the late director-book writer-lyricist Howard Ashman's 75th birthday. In the May 17 tribute, Calen B. Barnett as the Genie introduced a special post-show performance, which went on to feature Khadija Sanko, Ariana Groover, and Salome Smith from Off-Broadway's Little Shop of Horrors; Kyra Belle Johnson and Fergie Philippe from the upcoming North American tour of Beauty and the Beast; original Ariel voice artist and Broadway alum Jodi Benson to sing her signature song "Part of Your World"; and Menken, who sang "Proud of Your Boy" while accompanying himself on the piano.

Another Emmy nomination!

Alan and Glenn Slater have been nominated for "Outstanding Original Song For A Preschool, Children’s Or Animated Program" for their song “Nothing Left To Lose” from "Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure". After winning their first Emmy last season, this is a consecutive nomination from the same television series.

Beauty and the Beast stage revival/UK tour

Disney Theatricals is currently at work on a production of Beauty and the Beast which will tour the UK and Ireland in May 2021. The tour will launch with a five week run at Curve Leicester. The original creative team (including Alan) from the Broadway production will be joining the revival.

Alan’s thoughts

When I was asked about writing a stage musical of “A Christmas Carol” for Madison Square Garden, little did I know the amazing doors it would open for me.

Apparently I was the first artist approached in an attempt to build an all-star team, to write and mount a 90-minute musical in a 6000-seat space. I threw out some names I assumed we’d never get to do this, just to aim as high as possible; Mike Ockrent (who had just directed 2 hit musicals – “Me and My Girl “and “Crazy For You”), the adorable and talented choreographer Susan Stroman and Lynn Ahrens (a lyricist I admired who was a part of the exclusive collaboration of Ahrens and Flaherty – the writers of “Ragtime” and “Once on this Island”.) They all said “yes”. Wow!
